CSA CE Requirements

CSAs are required to complete 30 CSA CE credits every 3 years to remain a member of SCSA and use the CSA designation. 30 CSA CE includes 27 CE units plus 3 ethics credits.

The table below explains the different ways you can earn CSA CE. You do not need to do everything on this list, these are just available options.

The CSA Role, Rules, and Responsibilities online module.

Ethics courses approved for ethics CE credits by other professional organizations on topics directly related to seniors' needs and issues that were taken to meet other credentialing or licensing requirements – for example including but not limited to, renewal of CFP, CPA or CLTC, or a state L&H or real estate insurance license. All courses subject to approval.

One of the 3 CSA CE ethics courses that are offered online by WebCE www.csa.webce.com. Each of these 3 online courses offers Life and Health insurance CE credits and in some states, ethics CE. Number of L&H CE and ethics CE credits vary by state for each one:

  • Senior Market Sales Ethics, 6 CSA CE credits *
  • Maximizing Integrity in Decisions with Seniors, 6 CSA CE credits*
  • Effective and Ethical Communication with Seniors, 6

CSA CE credits *

*For courses worth 6 CSA CE credits 3 hours apply to the ethics recertification requirement and the other 3 hours apply to the remaining 27 hours required.

Volunteering for seniors n/a 16 1 hour of CSA CE credit may be earned for each 1 hour of volunteering for seniors

Providing direct care for a senior relative or family member can be included as volunteer experience for up to half of the maximum credits - 4.5 credits.

CE Courses n/a n/a All CE course, seminar or workshop on ethics topics or topics directly related to seniors from selected providers approved by SCSA (6 credits each). Sales and marketing topics are not acceptable.

SCSA online ethics courses (optional):

  • Senior Market Sales Ethics, 6 credits
  • Maximizing Integrity in Decisions with Seniors, 6 credits
  • Effective and Ethical Communication with Seniors, 6 credits
  • SCSA's Critical Issues in Aging series, three courses, 3 credits each; total 9
Audit the CSA Classroom or Web Course n/a 15 15 credits for auditing the SCSA classroom or web course if it has been more than 12 months since the individual earned the CSA designation.
Professional Conferences n/a n/a 1 day of participation in a professional conference from providers approved by SCSA (see SCSA website for criteria) that provides CE and covers topics directly related to seniors earns 6 CSA CE credits. Two (or more) days of participation in this type of professional conference earns 12 CSA CE credits.
Group Presentations n/a 10

1 CSA CE credit for each presentation to a different audience. Includes presentations of SCSA's Nine Tips for Seniors to Avoid Financial Abuse and PRS's America's Crisis in Aging, Ageless Wisdom for Ageless Living, Boomers & Their Parents.

Other presentations should be submitted to the Certification Council for pre-approval. Turnaround time for approval is 7 –14 calendar days, using the Pre-approval request form. Contact: Janice Moore, SCSA Certification Manager, at JaniceM@csa.us.

SCSA Faculty n/a 16 2 CSA CE credits for each 50-minute hour of SCSA course instruction, up to a maximum of 16
CSA Journal n/a n/a 1 CSA CE credit for writing an article published in the CSA Journal.
